| A
bit cheeky, this, as this book of photographs is
principally the work of the photographer, Jon Nicholson.
I was drafted in, late in the day, to write a foreword
explaining the history of the unlovely but peculiarly
charismatic strip of tarmac, white lines and signage
formerly known as the Great North Road. It is not
merely the ancient highway linking London and Edinburgh.
It is also the place where I was almost killed by
a speeding Ford Zodiac when I was seven and walking
to school near Doncaster. My lifelong obsession with
it is not ironic nerdiness: the A1 is edgy and interesting,
dammit. |
