The Gargoyle Club, Radio 4 documentary series
Produced by Simon Coates, broadcast February 2003

Intro

Based on my book, Dog Days in Soho, this five-part documentary series aims to debunk the bibulous, wink-wink view of 1950s Soho as raffish, enviably bohemian - and effortlessly inspirational. Yes, marvellous painters and writers flourished, but there were an awful lot of victims who ended up dead or mad. Interviewees include Maggi Hambling and the late George Melly. Another ‘Pick of the Week’.

'This splendid series about Soho in the 1950s is proving a marvellous way to spend a 15-minute afternoon break.'
